Anwar Ibrahim is seeking refuge in the Turkish Embassy in Kuala Lumpur following allegations of sodomy by an "aide" (see pictures below obtained by Anwar's office), who until recently was an UMNO member associated with the Deputy Prime Minister. Threats on Anwar's life and police investigation were also reported. Seems like Malaysia has indeed gone to the dogs and the current government is indeed keen to keep on ruling just like Mugabe in Zimbabwe. The accuser has once worked with the current deputy Prime Minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: Anwar Ibrahim, the Malaysian opposition leader, took refuge at the Turkish Embassy on Sunday after the police began investigating an allegation that he sodomized his male aide, reprising a sex scandal that led to his imprisonment a decade ago.

Anwar, 60, dismissed the accusation, made in a police complaint filed by the 23-year-old aide Saturday, as "a complete fabrication."

The dramatic developments that began to unfold a little before midnight Saturday are likely to further roil Malaysian politics, which have been in turmoil since elections on March 8 handed the governing National Front coalition its worst-ever result.
A three-party opposition coalition led by Anwar made spectacular gains, winning an unprecedented 82 seats in the 222-member Parliament and the legislatures of five states. Anwar has threatened to engineer defections from the National Front to bring down the government by September.

Anwar said in a written statement that the charge was "clearly a desperate attempt" to stop the progress of the Malaysian people toward freedom, democracy and justice.

Hours later, Anwar had moved to the Turkish Embassy amid concerns that he would be arrested and also because he had received anonymous death threats, said a party official, Azmin Ali, who said that the Turkish ambassador had "agreed to ensure his safety." Embassy officials could not immediately be contacted.

Anwar's wife, Azizah Ismail, said her husband was "safe and sound" for now but described the sodomy accusation as an attempt at "political murder."

More than 50 supporters gathered outside the Turkish Embassy anticipating a visit by Anwar's family. The police blocked roads in the area in an apparent security precaution.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi insisted the government was not responsible for the accusation, saying there was no conspiracy "to cause trouble or harass him or raise such issues to undermine him."

Anwar, a charismatic politician, was once part of the ruling establishment, rising to the post of deputy prime minister and finance minister in the government of Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad in the 1990s.

But it all unraveled in 1998 when he was accused of sodomizing his driver and abusing his power to cover up the act. Mahathir fired him from the government and had him jailed. Anwar was subsequently convicted on both charges, but Malaysia's highest court overturned the sodomy conviction and freed him in 2004.

Anwar insisted he was framed to prevent him from challenging Mahathir for power. After a decade in political oblivion, Anwar revived his career with the electoral success this year.

In his statement Sunday, Anwar said he "recently obtained" evidence that the national police chief, Musa Hassan, and the attorney general, Abdul Gani Patail, fabricated evidence against him in 1998. He said the latest accusation was engineered by "interested parties" to prevent him from exposing the two officials.
"I believe we are witnessing a repeat of the methods used against me in 1998 when false allegations were made under duress," Anwar said.

Bakri Zinin, the national police chief for criminal investigations, said the aide filed a complaint Saturday claiming Anwar had sodomized him in a condominium in an upscale Kuala Lumpur suburb. Bakri indicated Anwar faced no immediate threat of arrest, stressing that the police had just begun their investigation.

"We want to establish the allegation first to see whether there is truth or not," Bakri said. "We will conduct a thorough investigation and be fair to both sides."

Sodomy, even if consensual, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years in Malaysia, which has a Muslim majority. Anwar's People's Justice Party identified the accuser as Anwar's assistant, who started working for him in March.

Anwar did not run in the elections in March because his abuse of power conviction barred him from holding political office for five years. The ban ended in April, and Anwar has since indicated he wanted to re-enter Parliament through a by-election, which would make him eligible to become prime minister.

Saiful Bukhari Azlan (in blue shirt, first picture) (on the left, for the last 2 pictures), the mole in Anwar Ibrahim's office and the accuser, with UMNO big wigs, (1) in the Deputy PM's office, (2) with Shahrir Samad (UMNO MP for Johor Bahru) and (3) with Mustapha Mohamad (Federal Minister for Higher Education).

The following photographs were sent to us (Anwar's office) on 12th March 2008, soon after the 12th General Election. After it became known that he is a mole planted in Anwar Ibrahim's office, the trap was laid to turn the hunter into the hunted. And, true to form, the hunter laid his trap only to walk into it himself, with devastating results.

Poor loser! It is so obvious that UMNO was behind the plot to politically assassinate Anwar for good. Anwar's political comeback against the odds was remarkable. So the Malaysians thought that they could finally have a breath of fresh air to work towards a Malaysian Malaysia and dismantle apartheid. Politicians rarely give up power easily without a fight - even if it meant challenging election results and using underhand methods and dirty tricks. UMNO is indeed desperate as it reaches the end of the road following the election losses. Possible mass defection to Anwar's camp is bringing the former DPM closer to becoming the next PM.

UMNO has weakened considerably since the March elections. Mounting pressure on Badawi to step down, Najb's links with the murder of the Mongolian lady, low morale pervades all levels of the party.

However, the Malaysia of today is no longer as subservient as the past era under Mahathir. The people have awakened and it won't be easy to pull a fast one without a convincing case or a showdown with the people.

What's have the champions of human rights and democracy got to say about this sad state of affairs?

So who's this assassin Saiful Bukhari Azlan? According to a New Straits Times report, the man who alleged he was sodomised by Anwar was a former student leader who dropped out of university because he failed to make the grade. This shows that he is not very smart or didn't work hard, given that the bumis enjoy special privileges. He denied online postings in which other students said he left university because he had political aspirations. He is receiving training to be a pilot.

It is difficult to screen recruits and volunteers especially at a time when Anwar was building up his party and support. Yes, a mole had infiltrated the party but he has to prove that his allegations are truthful and that he is not working for UMNO political masters. Do UMNO leaders really think they could get away by employing hatchetmen to do the dirty job of removing a political archrival? It's his words against what majority of Malaysians believe. Another joke that will tarnish Malaysia's reputation. Guess UMNO will never learn.

M'sia's Anwar leaves Turkish embassy refuge: witnesses
June 30, 2008

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on Monday left the Turkish ambassador's house in Kuala Lumpur where he took refuge after being hit with sodomy accusations, a witness said.

Mr Anwar, 60, was accompanied by his wife and daughter, left the embassy around 6.45pm via the ambassador's residence. 'Only after I received assurances of my safety, (did) I leave. I'm leaving on my own volition,' he told reporters.
'I pray enough will be done for my security,' he added.

The former deputy premier fled to the embassy early on Sunday fearing for his security after police began investigating a young aide's allegation that Mr Anwar had homosexually assaulted him.

Foreign Minister Rais Yatim had summoned the Turkish ambassador on Monday to complain that Turkey had interfered in Malaysia?s internal affairs.

Mr Anwar said the charges were an attempt to derail his political comeback at the helm of a resurgent opposition, and came as he was poised to re-enter parliament with the backing of four defectors from the ruling coalition.

'That is why they brought these allegations against me,' he said. 'It is an attempt to destroy my political career.' His lawyer Sankara Nair said there was 'no question' of him being arrested.

'The home minister and deputy prime minister have given assurances for his safety. We take that assurance,' he said.
Earlier, Mr Anwar said the allegation he committed sodomy with a young aide was probably a ploy to distract public attention from rising food and fuel prices and other scandals afflicting Mr Abdullah's government.

'It's an intention to deflect public attention. But people can't be bought and misled by the (mainstream) media.'

Earlier this month, the government raised petrol prices by 41 per cent and diesel by 63 per cent to prevent subsidies from eating up a third of its budget. The move has sparked widespread anger and stoked inflation already at a 22-month high.
The former deputy premier had said he has been engineering defections aimed at overturning Mr Abdullah's majority in parliament at a time when Mr Abdullah was facing pressures from his own party to step down.

Mr Anwar said the sodomy accusation pre-empted his planned announcement this week that he would be running for a seat in parliament through a by-election and that four ruling coalition lawmakers would be defecting to the opposition coalition.
'The whole government was at stake,' he said. 'Four MPs already cleared with me.'

Political tensions have risen sharply in Malaysia since polls on March 8 that dealt Mr Abdullah's National Front coalition its worst electoral setback amid voter discontent over rising prices and corruption.

The Front lost power in five of Malaysia's 13 states as well as its traditional two-thirds majority in parliament. -- REUTERS, AFP

Current ruling party in Malaysia reluctant to play fair

Quote:
It was unlikely that the Malaysian current authorities would sit idly by and let PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim scheme his way into forming the next government. There was speculation that the government might possibly declare an emergency or call for a fresh election. Recently, there has been intense speculation that Umno has been trying to entice PAS to cooperate with it on the basis of Malay unity. And there is always fear that violence might break out if Anwar tries to take over the government. But never in our wildest imagination did we envision that someone would recycle that old allegation of sodomy.

Reports surfaced over the weekend that a personal aide of Anwar had made a police report alleging that the PKR leader had sodomized him in a condo in Kuala Lumpur. This was followed by an immediate press conference where Anwar denied the accusation. To add drama to the whole situation, he later took refuge at the Turkish Embassy because of fear for his personal safety.

The notion that a 61-year old with a bad back can forcibly sodomise a strapping 23-year old is laughable. This is simply not the kind of thing that anyone, not even Anwar's harshest critic, is going to believe. Instead, people are going to conclude that it's a desperate, politically- motivated conspiracy.

Cops interview sodomy accuser, deploy forensics unit

By LOURDES CHARLES

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have interviewed Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan who accused de facto opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomising him.

It is learnt a task force set up to investigate the allegation interviewed the 23-year-old former aide to Anwar on Monday, and immediately followed up on his information, including visiting and investigating the alleged crime scene, a condominium in Damansara.

A police forensic unit was seen at the condominium for almost five hours.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar confirmed police had interviewed Mohd Saiful, but declined to divulge details.

“We need to be fair to all parties concerned and we assure the public that we will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,” he said.

Ismail also said police had yet to receive any report from Anwar, his family members or his agents with regards to the alleged threat on his life.

“How can we investigate who, when, where and what the threat is all about if there is no police report lodged?” he said.
Saiful had on Saturday lodged a police report alleging Anwar had sodomised him at a condominium in Damansara last Thursday.

He was admitted to the hospital here for a medical examination and is under police protection.

On Sunday morning, Anwar fled to the Turkish Embassy here, seeking shelter after he had received death threats.

Skepticism exists that the Malaysian Police would do a fair and accurate job of exposing the lies of the accuser. Perhaps, the job should be handed to the FBI or the Scotland Yard. Remember, that this Police agency has no capabilities of even confirming the DNA analysis of a missing Malay girl and the job was finally handed to the FBI crime lab. Anwar's past DNA samples from previous trumped up charges and conviction are still available with the Malaysian authorities which could use these samples as evidence again. PKR or Anwar's lawyers should have been present when the Police forensic team was gathering evidence from the condominium where the alleged offense was supposed to occur.

PostPosted: Tue Jul 01, 2008 12:50 pm    Post subject: Anwar lodged police report Reply with quote

Notwithstanding the corruption, wanton politicking and biased police, judiciary and civil service, this is as much as any good law abiding citizen could try his best to work within the system. Anwar has lodged a police report on 1 July 2008 :

Quote:
I, Anwar bin Ibrahim, hereby make the following police report based on information that I have recently received.

1. This report is in relation to the investigation into the assault on me by the former IGP Tan Sri Rahim Noor on 20 September 1998. I believe Tan Sri Rahim Noor, after being prosecuted, pleaded guilty to the assault. I had lodged a police report in respect of the assault on 27.9.98.

2. In relation to the investigation into the assault, I believe that the Investigating Officer ACP Mat Zain bin Ibrahim (now Datuk Mat Zain) had conducted a thorough investigation and prepared an investigation paper (“IP”) which was presented by October 1998 to the former Attorney General, Tan Sri Mokhtar Abdullah and his team which included the current Attorney General Tan Sri Gani Patail for further action.

3. The said investigation paper concluded that Tan Sri Rahim Noor was the perpetrator of the assault on me. The said paper reached a conclusion after a thorough investigation which included medical reports by Hospital KL forensic specialists such as Dr. Ab. Halim Haji Mansar and Dr.Zahari bin Noor and statement from at least 60 witnesses. The medical reports concluded that the injury inflicted on me was consistent with an assault.

4. Despite the contents of the Investigation paper and the medical reports already available, Tan Sri Mokhtar with the assistance of the current Attorney General, Tan Sri Gani Patail then obtained the services of another doctor whom I was informed to be one Dr. Abdul Rahman Yusof.

5. Doctor Rahman in an undated and second report speaks of a “reconstruction of the scene” on 14 December 1998. I believe that this so-called reconstruction of the scene never happened.

6. It is an undisputable fact that Dr. Rahman’s reports in relation to the assault on me were done without actually even examining me at any time.

7. However, despite the IP and the already existing medical reports, Tan Sri Mokhtar in his press statement of 5 January 1999 appears to accept the views of Dr. Rahman on the so-called “inconsistencies” in the other medical reports by the doctors who actually physically examined me.

8. Tan Sri Mokhtar’s press statement also states that the investigation which had been carried out did not identify the person or persons responsible for my injuries. This is inconsistent with the IP which had already concluded by October 1998 that it was Rahim Noor who assaulted me. Tan Sri Mokhtar and his team therefore had willfully misled the public. As the police investigation done by Mat Zain had apparently not led to any conclusion, there was a public outcry and demand for a Royal Commission which was then set up. Tan Sri Mokhtar also made a false statement that the IP was submitted to him on 19.11.98. I believe that Tan Sri Gani Patail had full knowledge of the false contents of this press statement.

9. I believe Tan Sri Musa Hassan and Tan Sri Gani Patail were present in Bukit Aman on 20 September 1998 and knew about the assault by Tan Sri Rahim Noor on me. Tan Sri Musa and Tan Sri Gani further concealed the fact of the assault on me from the public until my black eye and injuries were revealed in court.

10. I believe both Tan Sri Musa and Tan Sri Gani Patail were actively involved in the procuring of the second undated report by Dr. Rahman which makes false and incredible conclusions such as “the pattern and nature of the injuries are not consistent with a direct blow”, “accidental nature of the injuries could not be ruled out” and “self-inflicted nature of the injury should be considered”. They gave the instructions to Dr. Rahman to proceed to write this second report and were acting under the direction and/or jointly with Tan Sri Mokhtar Abdullah.

11. These facts show that Tan Sri Musa Hassan, Tan Sri Gani Patail and SAC II Datuk Mat Zain bin Ibrahim (who, according to Dr. Rahman’s second report, accompanied him to the cell in Bukit Aman where I was detained and participated in the so-called reconstruction of the scene) conspired with Dr. Rahman to procure the production of this second report. This was done so that my police report of 27.9.98 in respect of the assault would be regarded as a false police report for which I could be charged, or at the very least, to damage my credibility, so as to affect my defence in the other criminal cases where I was charged for so-called “corruption” and sodomy to facilitate a conviction.

12. I wish to point out that Tan Sri Gani Patail was the senior prosecutor assisting Tan Sri Mokhtar in the prosecution against me. Tan Sri Musa Hassan was the Investigating Officer for my prosecution. I also believe, that in an unprecedented manner, an operation room specially for my prosecution was set up at Bukit Aman’s compound where all these individuals would meet regularly.

13. This is not the first time that allegations of fabricating evidence had surfaced in connection with Tan Sri Gani Patail. I am informed that in the Federal Court decision Zainur bin Zakaria v Public Prosecutor [2001] 3 MLJ, Steve Shim CJ in delivering his judgment pointed out that “… was he not justified, on a prima facie basis, in complaining that Tan Sri Gani Patail’s conduct at the meeting on 2.10.1998 was an attempt to get Nalla to fabricate evidence in order to perfect charges against him for other alleged sexual offences?” The references to “he” and “him” in that sentence are references to myself.

14. In relation to the above, I refer to the following documents which will be of assistance to the police:

1. The press statement by Tan Sri Mokhtar issued on 5.1.99.
2. The notes of proceedings in the report of the Royal Commission of the evidence of Dr. Rahman
3. The second undated report produced by Dr. Rahman exhibited in the Royal Commission report.

15. I call for a fresh investigation into the fabrication of evidence in this case which I am advised is an offence contrary to section 192 of the Penal Code punishable up to 7 years imprisonment. I ask that all the persons who are implicated in the procuring of this second report by Dr. Rahman i.e. Tan Sri Gani Patail, Tan Sri Musa Hassan, Dr. Rahman and Datuk Mat Zain bin Ibrahim be investigated thoroughly so that the truth is known and the offending individuals punished.

ANWAR BIN IBRAHIM

1st July 2008

Quote:
... Some in the government feel “under siege” says Mr Anwar, as the ruling National Front coalition looks as if it might be on the verge of losing power for the first time since the country gained independence in 1957.

Rising prices for food and fuel, among other goods, have stoked public anger. This month the government cut fuel subsidies, lifting the price of petrol by 41% and diesel by 63%. Scandals that loom over several leading public figures may also explain why the government is falling out of favour. All this has left the government in an “untenable position”, according to Mr Anwar. Voters have already shown their dissatisfaction by punishing the ruling coalition in elections in March. Mr Anwar suggests that it is now only a matter of weeks or months before parliamentary defections bring down the government.

Therefore the latest police statement announcing the investigation of fresh sodomy allegations against Mr Anwar was seen by many observers as politically motivated. Mr Anwar claims that the investigation is an attempt to prevent him from making political moves, expected in the next few days, which might hurt the government more. He had been poised to announce that he would stand as a candidate in a by-election. And he suggests that four members of the ruling coalition were going to switch sides and come out in support of him.

In addition Mr Anwar had recently suggested that he possesses evidence of malpractice by two important state institutions—the Inspectorate General of Police and the attorney-general’s office—in respect of an earlier criminal case (also involving sodomy, as well as corruption) that was brought against him in 1998, when he was deputy prime minister. He was imprisoned for the crimes but was released in 2004 after the conviction for sodomy was overturned on appeal. But the conviction for corruption still stood, with the result he was barred from political office until April this year.

He says that some of the individuals involved in judicial or investigative malpractice back in 1998 still hold high office and that the police’s latest allegations seemed to have been designed to forestall fresh revelations about the previous case.

Abdullah Badawi, Malaysia’s prime minister, insisted that the government was not behind the accusation and that there was no conspiracy “to cause [Mr Anwar] trouble or harass him or raise such issues to undermine him.”

Mr Anwar reckons that the authorities’ tactics would derail “for just a few days” the opposition’s hopes of taking power, but they were also likely to embarrass parliamentarians within the ruling coalition.

PM gives assurance of security

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has given an assurance of security for PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the latest police probe against him for sodomy.

The Premier said this Tuesday after meeting with Opposition Leader Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her daugther Nurul Izzah Anwar for 20 minutes at his office in Parliament building here.

Abdullah said during the meeting, Dr Wan Azizah had asked him to ensure the safety of her husband and that he would not be ill-treated.

“For the Government, we want to ensure the safety for whoever is involved in the case - whether it be the accuser or the accused.

“The laws of the country guarantee their security,” he told reporters here Tuesday.

PM can trust the security apparatus in Bolehland. But can the rakyat and Anwar Ibrahim trust them. Let's see. As pointed out by XP, Anwar has filed police reports against two big honchos in the enforcement agencies, the current IGP (Police Chief) and the Attorney General, who had implications in his incarceration for charges in 1998.

Unless you are well connected, you will get the phone number to the Inspector-General of Police. Read this article and judge for yourself the level of sophistication involved in this low ball set-up of framing Anwar Ibrahim. Family is talking about monetary help and political support from security forces and UMNO. But none will come for these people know, the case is hollow and will fall to pieces soon.

Family shoots down conspiracy theory

By FASLIKA DAS and ONG EU LIN Tuesday July 1, 2008

Quote:
PETALING JAYA: Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan’s family stands by him and stresses that no one put them up to accuse Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy.

An uncle of Mohd Saiful, who did not want to be named, said the family was on its own in this matter.

We are not getting any backing from the Government. We are on our own but as a family we fully support Saiful."

We had asked for the Government’s help but they have chosen to back off and not dirty their hands,” he said when met at his house here yesterday.

The uncle added that they had repeatedly called the Inspector-General of Police but were told to stop calling his number.

He said his nephew had initially approached the Bukit Aman police station to lodge his report against Anwar but they turned him away upon learning who he was accusing.

Mohd Saiful eventually found a police station in Kuala Lumpur which was willing to accept his report, his uncle added.

“Saiful is no longer in the hospital but is under police protection and even our family does not know his whereabouts,” he said.

The uncle said the family would eventually hold a press conference to allow Saiful to “explain from A to Z” his accusations against Anwar.

“Our family is a small family and we do not benefit in any way from Saiful’s revelation.

“We are not getting any money and in fact our family is being cut off by other people.

“Saiful is sacrificing himself for the country even though he knows that society will scorn him and the family for his accusation,” the uncle said.

He said Mohd Saiful had also contemplated suicide as he felt that he had committed a sin.

The uncle said he had been a strong supporter of Anwar but was disillusioned now.

On why Mohd Saiful had pictures with of him posing with Cabinet Ministers and a Prime Minister’s Department aide, his uncle said it was normal for a student leader to take pictures with government officials

The corrupt and devious could fool people once, or at least they cast doubts in people's minds in 1998. Think they could dupe the rakyat again? Any moron would know that you can't try the same trick twice especially when the first had been thrown out by the judiciary.

A small survey by the independent Merdeka Centre research firm found just 6 per cent of respondents believed the allegations, and nearly 60 per cent viewed it as politically motivated. The survey polled 225 ethnic Malays aged 20 and above.

A separate survey by the independent news website, Malaysiakini (www.malaysiakini.com), showed that 94.4 per cent of its respondents believed the allegation was part of a political conspiracy against Datuk Seri Anwar.

The crowd of more than 7,000 people showing up at an impromptu rally late last nigt is testimony of the strong support for Anwar.
