The Pope has denounced the West's materialism and lack of moral values, which he said were contaminating the world's poorest continent like "toxic waste".

In his homily, the Pope compared Africa, which he visited earlier this year, to a spiritual "lung" at risk of being attacked by what he called the viruses of materialism and religious fundamentalism.

First world do gooders who have been splashing their wealth on the African poor have failed to eradicate poverty and stimulate economic development in the dark continent. We have known this fact for some time but not many people would like to acknowledge the myth of the white man's burden. The Pope's admonishment is timely and should serve as a reminder to change the way we go about helping the less developed countries so that they will not require crutches all the time.
