Press freedom versus intrusion of privacy : which is more important when it comes to the crunch?

On the one hand, champions of democracy and press freedom argue that the rights of other people could be shortchanged by secrecy and irregularities that went unreported. However, irresponsible media for the purpose of sensationalisation to improve readership intrudes upon individual's privacy. Lest we forget, paparazi had unwittingly killed Princess Diana and company.
